Spotlight on Lauren

Lauren Roach, 23
Youth Programming Coordinator
RGVS student since December 2009

"The instructors were infinitely patient despite my stubborn resistance to actually try to perform rather than just sing my song. They gave me some extra time and support which I really appreciated. I have always loved singing, but have never considered myself a singer. I’ve sung in choirs before, but I mostly just sing in my room when I’m 99% sure no one is listening! So, for me, this was a bit of a jump. All in all, it was a great experience that I would have never considered without their gentle push and excellent instruction."

Lauren had studied classical voice in college. However, like many classically trained singers, she was afraid to use her chest voice, and thus her sound was breathy. Working with her to connect her head voice to her chest voice accomplished several things: Not only did it preserve her already remarkable vocal range, but it strengthened the tone quality throughout her entire vocal range, and gave her different 'colors' to play with, which enabled her to sing different styles of music with an appropriate genre specific sound.
